Many women have no idea what goes into the products they use for their periods. Tampons and pads come in contact with some of the most absorptive areas of the body, but feminine care products are not required by the FDA to list their ingredients.
I use Veeda tampons because I feel safe knowing Veeda lists one and only ingredient on their tampon packaging: 100% Cotton.
I want to spread awareness about what we are putting in our bodies as women, and the reasons why switching to non-toxic & safer tampons is a must.
Conventional tampons and pads from well-known brands (Tampax, Kotex & Playtex) are made from blends of bleached cotton and/or synthetic products. They can contain dioxins from the bleaching process, pesticide and herbicide residues, synthetic chemicals, artificial fragrances, and dyes.
Dioxins – are known carcinogens linked to endometriosis and disruptions of the hormonal and reproductive systems.
Pesticide and Herbicide Residues – linked to infertility, neurological dysfunction, and developmental defects, in addition to being another potential source of dioxins.
Fragrances & Other Chemical Additives -contain dozens of chemical ingredients. Many of these are allergens, sensitizers, and phthalates which have been linked to hormone disruption. Similarly, ingredients such as polyester, dyes, or rayon used in treated synthetic tampons can lead to burning, itching, and infection of the vaginal area, allergic reactions and/or general discomfort.
Veeda tampons and pads are made from hypoallergenic, 100% natural cotton, containing no chemicals, no synthetics, and no dyes. As a result, Veeda tampons reduce the risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS), irritation, and allergic reactions. Veeda product’s are priced competitively with conventional brands and are widely available. Veeda sources their 100% natural cotton directly from a global network of cotton traders and clean it with oxygen, not chlorine, for a more eco-friendly product.
Even though their packaging looks very similar to conventional feminine care brands,
Veeda packages use a biodegradable wrap that does not require special disposal, breaks down in 6-12 months, and has been approved for environmental safety.
What is TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome)?
TSS is a rare, but serious illness. It is caused by toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria that is commonly found on the skin and inside the nose and vagina. TSS can appear in women, men and children. The risk of contracting TSS is higher in adolescents and women under 30 years of age than in older women. Toxic shock syndrome can occur when women use tampons, especially “super-absorbent” ones. Although it is infrequent, it is important to know about.
Here’s the bottom line:
The FDA doesn’t require tampon brands to disclose comprehensive ingredients. The average woman will use 15,000 tampons and pads over the course of her life. No research has been conducted on the long-term effects of artificial fibers in tampons. In the absence of information, I’ll always choose simple and natural feminine care products.
